Career Goals Setting

Focus and Motivation are the most important traits a person should have to achieve big in career and life. All the other traits, skills and characteristics would follow these two pillars. Both of these can be affected by an external system / person. It is your responsibility to have the required focus and motivation by keeping the external dependencies under control.

Some jobs require extensive practice over time for human resources to excel in their respective roles, but someone cannot become a singer, actor or painter without having the required aptitude towards the same. So, a job seeker should identify her own skills, strengths and weaknesses instead of imitating the people who achieved in their career and life. In this way, you can define your own career, not others. When a person follows a certain path by acquiring new skills required to perform the job responsibilities better and then moves towards bigger roles within the same base job profile, then that person is said to be planning and building her career. For example, a salesperson would acquire the skills of marketing and sales over time and then would switch to Sales Manager and then marketing specialist. Here, she is not getting deviated from her base job profile (i.e., Sales and marketing). Likewise, an Assistant director in Films tries to get more knowledge on the latest techniques in film making and then becomes an Independent Film Director ! Take another example of a software developer. She worked as a Java developer for 5 years and then became Technical Lead and then she started leading the development team. She acquires new skills related to development and then tries to become a Solution Architect. These are some examples of building a fruitful career without deviating from the core skills/Job Profile.

You have to identify your SMART Objectives and then do the Goals Setting based on the same to be successful consistently in your career. Below are the significances of the letters in SMART.

S – SPECIFIC

M – MEASURABLE

A – ACHIEVABLE

R – REALISTIC

T – TIMELY

All the above words are self-explanatory and if you do the Goals Setting for your rewarding career, then you can ensure that your career is rewarding and memorable !
